Retaining Students
Adams State College has taken a number of steps in recent years to bolster student enrollment, ranging from the construction of new dorms to the expanded sports programs. But to fully take advantage of increasing enrollments, which last year included a freshman class of 534 students, school officials hope to hang on to more of them once they walk through the door.
Underage Binge Drinking
More than half of Adams State College students and 72 percent of Trinidad State Junior College students younger than 21 drank alcohol on two or more days in the last 30 days, according to a survey by the San Luis Valley Prevention Coalition’s Underage Drinking Task Force. The Healthy Kids Colorado 2009-10 survey revealed that 26 percent of seniors and 12 percent of kids in grades 6-12 in Alamosa have been binge drinking in the past 30 days prior to being surveyed. Binge drinking is defined as five or more drinks of alcohol in a row within a couple of hours.
“Doc” Cotton Inducted into RMAC Hall of Fame
Retired Adams State College coach and professor Jack “Doc” Cotton, one of the original Denver Nuggets and a tireless promoter of ASC and the San Luis Valley, will be inducted into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs June 26.

ASC Student Meets Presidents
A San Luis woman had a front row seat for Mexican President Felipe Calderon's visit to the White House on Wednesday. Ashley Anjelica Maestas, who will be a junior at Adams State College next year, was a guest of the Latin American Educational Foundation when the White House hosted the official state visit.
Tuition Hike for ASC
Adams State College Board of Trustees approved a $45 million budget for next year, including a 9 percent tuition hike for undergraduates. The new rate for in-state residents would be $123 per credit hour, while out-of-state students would pay $538 per credit hour.
Deer With Gunshot Wounds Found on ASC Campus
According Chief Joel Shults, with the Adams State College Police Department, a campus police officer on patrol saw the deer on campus but didn't notice anything was wrong.

Professor Honored
An Adams State College professor will receive a national award from her peers for a dissertation that examines the decision making of athletes. Teri Hepler, an assistant professor in the school's Human Performance and Physical Education Department, will be honored Friday in Indianapolis by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
Dorm Construction at Adams State Moving Along


New fees approved by Adams State College students have enabled the construction of the first dormitory on campus in about 40 years. Construction of the new residence hall has been under way for several months and is showing good progress.



Situated immediately adjacent to the football field, the dorm has stadium seating integrated into its architecture. In addition to the webcam at the top of SLV Dweller's home page, a new webcam from Adolfson & Peterson Construction shows a wider view of the new facility.
A Jew, Christian, Muslim and Buddhist - Interfaith panel tonight
What are the core teachings of your tradition? How did you become a Jew, Christian, Muslim, or Buddhist and why do you remain one? How does practicing this tradition affect your everyday life? Documentary Screenings at ASC
Adams State college is proud to be screening two amazing documentaries about undocumented youth, particularly Hispanic youth, over the next couple of days. As a highlight of GAB's diversity month, we will be hosting the move 'Papers' on Tuesday, February 16th at 6pm in Carson Auditorium, with an appearance by the movie's soundtrack artists to follow. On Wednesday, February 17th at 6pm in Carson Auditorium, we will host "800 Mile Wall", and have a brief presentation by a LaPuente volunteer who spent some time in the border area this past year. New Lacrosse Director
Adams State College Director of Athletics Larry Mortensen has announced that Jason Lamb has been hired as the Grizzlies' new Director of Lacrosse.
ASC Construction Plans Accelerated
Adams State College officials have accelerated construction plans thanks to a favorable bond market and hope to tackle an additional $27 million in building renovations and street closures by spring of 2011.
ASC Enrollment Up
Spring semester enrollment at Adams State College is up 21 percent over last year with a total enrollment of 2,968.
Book Signing Scheduled at Antonito Library
Dr. Carole Counihan and her husband, Dr. Jim Taggart, are donating proceeds from their books, "A Tortilla Is Like Life: Food and Culture in the San Luis Valley of Colorado" and "Alex and the Hobo", to benefit the Antonito Scholarship at Adams State College. The authors are scheduled for a book signing at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, in the Antonito Library. The women of Antonito and the food that helps define their culture is the topic of Counihan's book, "A Tortilla Is Like Life" and Taggart's book is co-authored by Antonito native Jose Inez Taylor.
Harvard Lecturer to Give ASC Keynote
A woman who grew up on a farm near Sargent and went on to lecture at the Harvard School of Medicine will deliver the keynote address at Adams State College's Dec. 19 commencement.
Solar Powered Adams State
The Adams State College Board of Trustees moved forward with a solar power proposal that could supply the campus with as much as 30 percent of its power, should Xcel Energy and the governor's energy office sign off on the project.
