Salazar Preview to the State of the Union Address
Colorado's Ken Salazar delivered his preview address to the State of the Union in both English and Spanish, the first time that has ever occurred. In the speech, Salazar gave the Democratic view of the challenges facing the nation, saying there would be a vote in both the House and Senate on President Bush's Iraq policy as well as the passing of comprehensive immigration reform. The intolerant Republican Representative Tom Tancredo was irked about the Democrat's Spanish-language preview speech. Congressman Xavier Becerra of California, assistant to the speaker, will deliver the official Democratic response in Spanish to President Bush's State of the Union Address on Jan. 23, 2007.

3rd Congressional District
Two years ago, Republicans were elbowing each other to run in Colorado's 3rd Congressional District and the party helped to raise more than $1.6 million to secure it. Today, Democratic Rep. John Salazar is in the seat and Republican Scott Tipton is campaigning against him largely without the help of national Republicans, whose priorities now lie with securing incumbents in uncertain districts and saving money from what they say is a long shot, even in a Republican-leaning district.
Salazar Brothers Divided on Immigration?
Rep. John Salazar was one of just 36 Democrats who voted late last year for a tough Republican-backed House bill that would make being in the country illegally a felony and proposed construction of the fence. His younger brother, Sen. Ken Salazar backs a Senate plan that would give law-abiding illegal immigrants a chance to earn U.S. citizenship. Yet, they insist that there's no split between them on how the nation should deal with illegal immigration.
Salazar Speaks on Immigration
"In my home state of Colorado, the first non-natives to explore our lands were the Spanish. They arrived nearly 500 years ago, and left their mark on the American Southwest and Colorado. Their presence is reflected in the names of my state and its cities, rivers, and mountains, and even in the food we eat. My own family migrated to Colorado in the 1850sóalmost 20 years before Colorado became a state. We came from northern New Mexico and Santa Fe--a city we helped found over 250 years earlier, before there was a Plymouth Rock or a Jamestown. We pioneered the settlement of Colorado's San Luis Valley, where we have farmed the same land for generations." read more...
