High Winds Cause Accidents, Power Outages and Fires
Strong wind gusts are blamed for downing power lines that sparked a fire at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve that eventually burned approximately 160 acres.

Xcel Energy customers in the southern portion of the Valley were without power Wednesday afternoon, as 75-mile per hour winds blew a tree onto a 69,000-volt transmission line south of Alamosa affecting some 2,800 customers (including SLV Dweller) affecting the towns of Romeo, Manassa, Sanford, Ortiz, Platoro, and La Jara.

Megan Dawn Fahrenkrug, 22, of rural Alamosa died in a three vehicle traffic accident that investigators believe may have been caused by poor visibility due to blowing dust and debris from the high winds.

Bureau of Reclamation in the SLV
From The San Luis Valley Project, a lengthy history of the Bureau of Reclamation's work in the SLV:

The Bureau of Reclamation project report of April 1947, concluded that the two reservoir plan was preferable to the single reservoir plan. The report also concluded that a 60,000 acre-foot reservoir at Platoro would provide 90 percent of the benefits of the two reservoir plan. The Reclamation report recommended construction of Platoro Dam and deferral of construction on the second dam. Based upon these recommendations, Reclamation began to build Platoro Dam in 1948 with a schedule for completion in 1953.

Grizzlies in the SLV?
On Sept. 23, 1979, outfitter Ed Wiseman of Crestone unexpectedly turned up a bit mauled and claimed to have killed a female grizzly in self-defense near Platoro Reservoir. The Grand Junction Sentinel has a current assessment of whether or not there may still be such behemoths around.

DOW Surveys Fish Population
Yesterday an eight-member DOW crew walked up a 1,000-foot stretch of the Conejos River netting nearly 90 percent of the fish population in the stretch and placing them in a temporary containment area. The fish identification study also helps the DOW determine the proper fishing regulation so that the fish population stays healthy, Alves said.
Trout Unlimited Honored
The U.S. Forest Service has given its "Rise to the Future" Award for the best fisheries project of 2002 to the San Luis Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited. The chapter rebuilt the upper Conejos River below Platoro Reservoir, creating habitat that allowed trout to survive a record drought.
