Annual Rio Grande Meeting
The body that governs Colorado's downstream commitments on the Rio Grande held its annual meeting in Alamosa with few surprises. The Rio Grande Compact Commission, which includes representatives from Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, received the final tallies on 2009 water deliveries.
Oxbow Ranch Preserved
One of the most scenic and wildlife-rich ranches in the San Luis Valley will stay that way, thanks to a recently completed conservation easement. Alan and Patricia Lisenby, owners of the Rio Oxbow Ranch, and the Rio Grande Headwaters Land Trust signed off on an agreement protecting 565 acres.

Film Crew in Valley
One of ten finalists in The Doorpost Film Project, a second annual non-profit short film contest, Austin-based production company One Spark Films spent this past weekend shooting along the Rio Grande. Scenes were also shot at Clear Creek Falls near Creede and the Rainbow Grocery in South Fork as part of a shoot for the twelve-to-twenty-minute "Guest Room" that took them through three states — Texas, New Mexico and Colorado — over the course of seven eighteen-hour days.
Willow Creek Restoration and Annexation
The town board of trustees took a step toward annexing the Willow Creek floodplain south of town Monday. The board adopted a land-use plan and agreed to a memorandum of understanding with the property's owners. The floodplain - a 1.5-mile stretch between Creede and the creek's confluence with the Rio Grande that greets visitors as they enter the town on Colorado 149 - has been left largely barren and incapable of naturally restoring itself after nearly a century of mining in the former boomtown.
New Federal Levee Standards Create Problems
The tree-studded levee that protects the city of Alamosa from the Rio Grande no longer is up to snuff, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Federal Funds for Platoro
Dam Safety upgrades for Platoro Reservoir, located 25 miles south of Del Norte on the Conejos River, are included in a federal funding bill.

Road and Bridge Construction is Protested in Crestone
Several Baca Grande residents are protesting the construction of a road in their subdivision by Saguache County commissioner's candidate Chuck Grant, a project they believe has violated their property rights and irreparably harmed the environment.
